Cheap holidays to New York for those with more Twitter followers

A travel company is offering cheaper holiday deals to those who have a higher number of Twitter followers.

The website, Hotelied promises discounts to people joining the site, depending on the figure of social media followers they can offer.

When you log in to the site you can link it up with up to five social media networking sites, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+.

Then, you can search for where you'd like to stay, with a choice of five cities - New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Portland and Tel Aviv.

The idea is if you have a higher number of followers on your social media networks you're more likely to give free advertising to the hotels you stay at, which is why Hotelied offers the discounts.

Using one of the team's personal Twitter accounts, with a following of 2,700, we discovered you could get up to a 20% discount on top New York hotels, such as the fancy Sixty Lower East Side hotel

However, using another personal account, with 100 followers, only a 10% discount was offered.

This isn't the first time that social media has been used as currency to "pay" for items. The website offers people the chance to read content once they've tweeted it. The idea is that whoever has produced the content doesn't just give their content away for free, they get their readers to share it first before they can read it.

Other ways of "paying" for items also includes being a secret shopper, whereby reviewers can get free meals and free shopping.
