Despite being considered as one of the most beautiful women in the world, star of TV show Scandal Kerry Washington has revealed her struggle with her self-esteem:
“I didn't grow up thinking I was pretty; there was always a prettier girl than me. So I learned to be smart and tried to be funny and develop the inside of me, because I felt like that's what I had.”
Speaking to Lena Dunham, whose cameo in Scandal airs this week, in the April issue of Marie Claire in the US, the actress speaks candidly about her life, her daughter and her work.
The 38-year-old, who is married to NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha is renowned for being private about her off-screen life and has managed to successfully stay out of the press. On how she achieves this, she responds that she used to be much more open:
“Earlier in my career I was much more super-sharey. There were moments when I wanted to process things that were happening to me more privately, and I didn't have the space to do it, because once you let people in, they're in and you don't get to say, 'Oh, I want this for myself.'”
However, she does reveal a little bit about her private life by talking about her daughter Isabelle, who she gave birth to in April 2014:
“I just want [daughter Isabelle] to know that she's heard. Really heard, because I feel like that is what we all really want. When I think about any of the missteps in my life that I've made, all of which I'm grateful for, it's because I just so wanted to be truly seen and heard for who I am and was afraid I wasn't or wouldn't be. I see you, I hear you, I'm with you as you are.”
Of course, she does also talk about Scandal and how Olivia Pope has changed her life:
“I don't think I consciously say, 'What would Olivia Pope do?' but there's a new thread of belief in my own capacity that I think comes from her. She makes it happen. She figures it out. She fixes it.”
While the full interview isn't revealed for another few days, the introduction is shared and in it Lena talks about how much respect she has for Kerry.
“If I believed in the term girl crush, I would use it on her, and if I needed advice on how to stay classy, strong, and honest in the public eye, she is who I would consult.”
In the run-up to her appearance on Scandal, Lena shared this selfie (pictured above) of the pair on set filming Lena's scenes. The Girls creator and star will play a woman who is intending to expose the sex secrets of the most powerful elite in Washington D.C.
While we don't know her name, we do know that her nickname is 'Kinky Sue'.
Now all we need is for Kerry to appear in Girls and our lives will be complete.
