Germans kiss goodbye to office peck

Germans face kissing goodbye to the friendly office peck, if a national etiquette group gets its way.

The Knigge Society has proclaimed the practice of greeting co-workers with a kiss as uncomfortable, asking it be abandoned in favour of handshakes and a 60cm “social distance zone”. Chairman of the group Hans-Michael Klein said of the blanket ban: “People say that kissing is not typical German behaviour. It has come from places like Italy, France and South America, and belongs in a specific cultural context. ‘We don’t like it’, they say. We have to protect people who don’t want to be kissed.”
