Snake is back! The classic mobile game is coming to smartphones next week

Before Facebook, Twitter and Instagram there was one thing we used to unanimously turn to if we had a few minutes to kill - Snake.

The highly addictive game - where the goal was to stop a serpent from crashing into walls and get it to eat as much fruit as possible - is well ingrained in the memories of anyone who owned (or had access to) a Nokia phone.

And now the famous pastime is to make a comeback on smartphones next Thursday (14 May).

The new app called Snake Rewind will be released for iOS, Android and Windows Phone by the original creator Taneli Armanto.

"Snake Rewind takes the iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake game and combines them with cool visual effects, sounds and innovative new features," says Armanto, who designed the game for Nokia.

Unlike the original game, which first appeared on Nokia's 6110 handset in 1997, players will be able to rewind the snake after it has crashed, navigate through ten levels with different visuals and music and compete with friends.

Details on price haven't yet been released, but technology journalists anticipate it will be free to download and cost to upgrade.
