Shoppin, ravin, chattin: the new pro-EU campaign posters aimed at young people

Remember when you were a teenager and your parents would try and speak your ‘lingo’ so they could relate?

Well, the Britain Stronger In Europe campaign group have decided to channel that spine-tinglingly uncomfortable feeling in a new video aimed to encourage young people to vote remain in June’s EU referendum.

The video and accompanying posters signal the launch of the #Votin campaign, designed to remind young people that they must register by 7 June if they are to have their say in what politicians have referred to as the ‘decision of a generation’.

Each poster has an image of a ‘youth’ engaging in youthful activities such as splashing around in the sea in fluorescent sunglasses, being arty or being super keen at school, over which some #inspirational words are pasted, such as ‘learnin’, ‘mixin’, ‘workin’ ‘chillin’; before the hashtag #votin.

The campaign is a hip and trendy approach to politics which plays on the way in which today’s ‘youths’ speak, by dropping key consonants – in this case, the letter ‘G’.


Speaking to BuzzFeed News, the group say they were seeking a “completely unique look and tone” to showcase “how young people benefit from the EU and how EU membership is vital for jobs, the NHS, travelling and studying abroad, keeping prices down and protecting the environment”.

Scott Townsin, one of the designers at venturethree responsible for the adverts, told the site that the posters speak to the "Easy Jet generation" as they’d like to be spoken to:

“The campaign talks to young people as young people, cutting jargon and cliché” with an “anti-establishment feel.”

The launch is backed by education minister Sam Gyimah MP, who has written an accompanying blog post in which he emphasises that young people will be the worst affected if Britain votes to leave, “finding it harder to get a job, suffering the squeeze of lower wages and higher prices, and forfeiting their automatic right to work, study and travel abroad.”


A recent Observer poll revealed that young people could be the key to keeping Britain in the EU, as they are most likely to vote Remain…if they turn up to vote (rather than sleepin).

But, rather than having the desired effect, people have taken to twitter to mock the posters, just wishin and hopin and prayin they're a joke:
