Whose style has really caught our eye this year? From glamorous red carpet gowns to the most striking street style looks (plus a few chic on-screen outfits), see our round-up of the 30 fashion hits of the year. Who was your best dressed? Rate your favourite look out of five or tweet us the #bestdressedoftheyear @StylistMagazine.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Diane Kruger

Diane Kruger is a bit of a chameleon on the red carpet, from the floaty, floor-length gowns by the likes of Prabal Gurung and Chanel she sometimes wears, to edgier pieces like a Jason Wu jumpsuit and cutaway Versus dress. Her off-duty looks always catch our eye too, but our personal favourite is the outfit she wore to the Chanel Haute Couture show - mainly because she pulled off this jaunty hat with aplomb.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Naomie Harris

Bérénice Marlohe was the archetypal Bond girl bombshell when the Skyfall promotional tour came around, but Stylist cover girl Naomie Harris was our best dressed on the red carpet every time, from the Marios Schwab sheer gown she wore to the Royal World premiere, to this oversized Chanel knit dress.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart really came into her own on the red carpet this year, shying away from traditional gowns and wearing Balenciaga (a natural choice for the face of their latest perfume) and daring pieces like this sheer Zuhair Murad jumpsuit.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Emma Stone

The Amazing Spiderman promotional tour has been a catwalk for Emma Stone, as she walked the red carpet time and time again in flawless looks. There are many great outfits we could mention (the gothic Gucci look she wore in Paris, a purple Carven shift she wore atop the Empire State building for a photocall), but this Chanel look is our favourite.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Rooney Mara

Her mainly Givenchy wardrobe, her love of monochrome and muted colours, that bold black fringe - Rooney Mara was the breakout red carpet star of the year thanks to Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Never afraid to wear directional shapes or unusual colours, her style is refreshing in a sea of frothy, pastel-hued frocks.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Marion Cotillard

What do you wear when you're the face of Dior, and even design bags for the brand? You rarely wear anything else on the red carpet - and look impossibly elegant at all times.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Michelle Williams

A firm favourite of the office (and not just because this writer was inspired to get a short haircut by her pixie crop), Michelle Williams never puts a red carpet foot wrong - her Louis Vuitton peplum red dress was easily our favourite Oscars gown.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley can work a green dress (Atonement, anyone?), so it's no wonder this pale mint Erdem creation was one of our favourite looks of 2012.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway cut her hair off for her role in Les Miserables, and transformed into one of the more daring dressers on the red carpet - from this striking Prabal Gurung gown to the draped Givenchy creation she wore to the Les Mis London premiere.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Blake Lively

In the year Gossip Girl comes to an end, it only seems right to honour one of its most stylish stars - Blake can always be relied on to bring full-on glamour to the red carpet.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Jennifer Lawrence

At The Hunger Games premieres, all eyes were on Jennifer Lawrence, who busted out a series of show-stopping gowns - like this Prabal Gurung gold number.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth works a monochrome look like no other - and her Tom Ford dress for the Oscars was a definite highlight on the red carpet.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Jessica Biel

From her eye-skimming fringe to love of bold colours and shapes on the red carpet (plus her pink Giambattista Valli wedding dress), Jessica Biel's red carpet style isn't to everyone's taste, but we're fans - especially this sugary pink Dior dress.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Olivia Palermo

Impeccably groomed and impeccably dressed, Olivia Palermo's arrival at London Fashion Week was met with open arms by the street style photographers.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Miranda Kerr

The supermodel knows how to work a Victoria's Secret runway, but it's her off-duty model style that has gained Miranda a place on our best-dressed list.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Alexa Chung

She's been voted winner of the British Style Award for three years running - and with good reason. Whether on the red carpet in a lace Valentino gown, or snapped in her new home, New York, in denim dungarees, we still can't get enough of Alexa's style - or "ripping off Jane Birkin" as she calls it.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Miroslava Duma

This pint-sized Russian fashion writer was our street style star of 2012, wearing an array of chic looks at every fashion week .

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Leigh Lezark

The model/DJ/front row regular looks as great in denim cut-offs and a cropped T-shirt as a floor-length Zac Posen creation (pictured) - we think it's the flawless complexion and signature jet black bob.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Gwen Stefani

The return of No Doubt meant we saw a lot more of Gwen Stefani this year, and whilst she always looks immaculate on stage and on the red carpet, it's her off duty style that we love. Checked shorts, a tailored jacket and that signature red lipstick for walking her dog in the park? Classic.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Jessica Alba

Another off-duty style star, Jessica is often far more fashion-forward off than on the red carpet.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Laura Bailey

The model, writer and face of Radley was one of the best dressed at London Fashion Week. Never afraid to mix up prints and opt for voluminous skirts and high-necked blouses, her style caught our eye this year

  • Solange Knowles

Beyonce's little sister is a street style star in her own right, frequently on the front row at New York Fashion Week, and always photographed in bold prints and bright suits. From her box braids to natural afro curls, she's also got the best hair on our best dressed list.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: LeeLee Sobieski

A somewhat under the radar but impeccably dressed star, LeeLee was snapped in this beautiful Dior coat at Paris Fashion Week.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Rihanna

Ever the style chameleon, Rihanna churned out look after look this year, switching from a series of chic Stella McCartney ensembles during London Fashion Week in February, to more androgynous menswear looks for her 777 promotional tour, and white Alexander Wang on The X Factor. Never one to let you get bored, she changed her hair almost as frequently as her wardrobe.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Nicole Scherzinger

When tweeting The X Factor, there was only one person you all showed tweet-appreciation for - Nicole Scherzinger. As well as coining questionable terms like "Scha-mazing", she wowed us with her weekly outfit choices, from a white trouser suit (which divided opinion, but we think she pulled it off) to this Bibi Bachtadze creation.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Team GB

With Team GB dressed by Stella McCartney, our athletes were always going to be the most stylish in the stadium.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Mary Berry

Mary Berry knows how to dress for TV - her bold jackets and shirts on The Great British Bake Off earned her legions of fashion fans - this Zara bomber in particular.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Kate Bosworth

The face of Topshop's Christmas campaign and first single (although we think a Christmas Number 1 is unlikely), Kate still looks great on and off the red carpet. Her festival style in particular will always inspire - but we also like this look from the Burberry A/W 12 show.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Freida Pinto

Freida gets our vote for her ability to work bold, eye-popping prints and directional prints - at Cannes she was one of our best dressed on the red carpet.

  • Best Dressed of 2012: Jaime King

Model-turned-actress Jaime King is not afraid of a statement red carpet look (she was a huge advocate of Prada's brothel creepers) - this all-purple outfit is one of our highlights.
