Bridget Jones’s Diary fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the new Bridget Jones’s Baby film next month, which sees Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth reprise their roles, joined by potential baby-daddy Patrick Dempsey.

Helen Fielding just took excitement levels up a notch however, by revealing that she’s penned a brand new book to join the big screen instalment of her bestselling series.

Titled Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries, the book will be released in October, and is based on Fielding’s original columns in the Independent.

According to a press release, the book will ‘tell Bridget’s story of her somewhat bumpy journey into motherhood,’ yet what’s not clear is whether the novel will feature Mark Darcy, who, despite featuring in the new film, was actually killed off by Fielding in Bridget Jones’s Diary: Mad About The Boy.

Bridget Jones's Baby

What’s likely, is that Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries will act as a prequel of sorts to the 2013 instalment, charting her journey into motherhood before becoming the widow we meet in Mad About The Boy.

“As she careers towards baby-deadline, tortured by Smug Mothers miming her ticking biological clock, a series of classic Bridget Jones moments finally leads her into pregnancy – but just not quite as intended,” reads the teaser.

“It’s a pregnancy full of cheesy potatoes, outlandish advice from Drunken Singletons and Smug Mothers, chaos at scans and childbirth classes, high jinks and romance, joy and despair – but all of it dominated by the terribly awkward question – ‘Who’s the Father?’”

Talking about her latest work, Fielding says: “At heart Bridget Jones is about the gap between how we all feel we’re expected to be and how we actually are and – as Bridget discovers with her somewhat bumpy pregnancy - how we expect life to turn out and how it actually does.

“I’m excited to see Bridget’s world on the big screen again, and delighted to be published by Jonathan Cape.”

Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries will be released 11 October 2016.
